“Time and time again, we hear: “Women don’t read science fiction. Women don’t write science fiction,” says author A.C. Wise on her blog. So true. I often feel like an exotic and strange animal in the zoo when I tell people I love to read science fiction, especially the classics from 1950-1970s. Even weirder: I’ve started to write stories within the frames of science fiction.
A.C. Wise has now put up a wonderful long list with women authors who’ve made their first speculative sale (pro or otherwise) within the last two years.
I’m honored to be on the list with so many exciting new names. I’m also honoured to be on a list with women speculative authors. It’s well worth taking a closer look at the list if you’re curious about new writer voices (here). Happy reading!
Wonderful, congratulations! I’ve had girlfriends give me the weirdest looks when I tell them I like sci-fi.
Thank you so much! Yes, same here. Then again, I’ve also discovered that some people, after realizing you like science fiction, become very surprised when they realize you read other literature, even the classics. When I started to write, some people took it for granted that I wrote science fiction (spiced with the attitude it wasn’t “real literature”), and are surprised when I say I write within several genres.
I can’t imagine limiting myself to one genre or style. I’m interested in too much! I love the classics, too, I think we share a love of Jane Austen 🙂
We do! Yes, same here. Can’t limit myself to one genre. 🙂
